How to Prevent Damage to Your Roof in Arizona
- On July 6, 2018
Summer in Phoenix brings heat and a season full of fun, but it also brings something else – monsoons. From approximately June 15 until the end of September, these storms bring rain, high winds, hail, and dust. They also have a tendency of causing problems with roofs that are not in top shape. This creates a problem not only outside your home but also inside. As rain leaks into cracks or gathers in pools on your roof, you wake up to the dripping of water inside your home or see wall damage as the wall is destroyed from the inside out from the water damage. Here are some ways you can prepare now for the Phoenix monsoon season and whether it with a roof that has held up to the pressure.
Check Trees
Make sure no branches are hanging over your roof. These branches can snap off in the wind and poke holes in the roof. Another problem with low-hanging branches is that bees tend to swarm around them and find ways to build nests in your roof. This causes holes that weaken the roof and allow rain to enter. Make sure any trees that are tall enough to fall on the roof if they topple are in good health and well-grounded. When heavy rains come, they can erode the soil around these trees and cause them to fall onto your roof, creating significant damage.
Get a Roof Inspection
Having your roof inspected once a year will help you catch any issues before they become big problems. Make sure the inspector takes care of any loose roofing tiles and seals up any seams that may be weak. Making sure your roof is in the best shape possible will help keep it secure against the elements and will keep your family dry during the strongest monsoon.
Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Leaves and other debris can clog gutters and stop the water from draining properly. This causes water to either pool on your roof or overflow and ends up in areas that are not suited for the heavy water. The water can end up running roofing tiles into your home or pooling at the foundation and causing a weakening of both the foundation and any nearby trees.
