Common Sources of Water Damage in Arizona Homes
- On April 9, 2018
Being in the desert, Arizona isn’t a place many homeowners consider at risk for water damage to their home. This is a fairly uncommon problem in regards to weather-related roof leaks, but there are other ways that water can cause damage to your home, resulting in both structural damage and possible health risks due to mold. Let’s explore the ways water can cause damage to your Phoenix home.
Plumbing
Pipes wear out and a busted pipe for your bathroom or kitchen can create a major disaster in regards to water damage. Plumbing is most often the cause of between the wall water damage.
Appliances
The ice maker on your refrigerator can come loose or break. This creates a constant flow of water. If not noticed right away, the damage can be extensive. Washing machines and dishwashers also have components that can break and result in water issues.
Flooding
Flooding can happen even in desert regions. An unexpected heavy rain that passes through quickly can sometimes occur but the most common cause of flooding in Arizona is from sewer pipes being plugged or breaking. Damage can happen quickly and extensively in these situations.
A Word on Mold
With any water damage, there is the likelihood of mold developing if the cause is not fixed immediately. Most molds thrive in wet conditions so the longer your water damage goes undetected, the greater the chance you and your family have of experiencing problems related to molds. The most prevalent mold-related illnesses are respiratory. This can be especially dangerous for the very young, the elderly, or anyone who deals with breathing-related problems like asthma or COPD. Those dealing with compromised immune systems are also in greater danger of mold-related illness. It is essential that any water damage restoration that is done also includes mold cleaning.
Signs of Water Damage
In addition to unaccounted for puddles in strange places. you can spot the signs of water damage by looking for discoloration of walls and ceilings. If the water damage is under the floor, you may notice tiles coming loose or the grout between tiles showing discoloration. For other floors, the first sign of damage will most likely be a “squishy” feeling when you step on the area above the water damage. You will get a feeling like you are walking on a waterbed over time.
