Water Emergency – What Do I Do?
- On January 16, 2017
When a pipe bursts, an air conditioner condensate line leaks, or a monsoon storm causes flooding to occur in your home, it can be hard to see past the disaster but taking fast action is a must in this situation. This article will provide a general understanding on what to do when you are faced with this type of water emergency!
- First and foremost you must identify the source of the water leak- if it is possible shut off the water to this area to prevent more water damage.
- Call out the service professional to fix the source of the leak ie. Plumber, HVAC, Roofer.
- Make the call to a certified IICRC Restoration professional to come in and clean up the water and dry out any structures affected by the water. Time is of the essence to avoid/prevent the possibility of mold growth, as it only takes 24-48 hours for this to happen.
A professional will come into your home to assess the affected area, they will use a handheld digital moisture meter, and other instruments to measure you how deep the water went and if there is moisture hiding in areas unseen to the eye.
They will explain their findings to you and will discuss the detailed treatment plan to bring your home back to its pre-loss condition. They will also discuss with you the payment options and can provide some insight on next steps to get the ball rolling.
Once the work agreement is signed, the water cleanup & structural drying will begin. The restoration team will bring in the equipment to demo out the wet area first. Once that is complete, the monitoring process will begin on a daily basis, adjusting equipment and methods as needed until your property is “certified dry”.
